Rohan Bopanna of India achieved a historic milestone at the ATP Finals by becoming the oldest player, at 43, to secure a victory in a year-end match. He partnered with Matthew Ebden, defeating Rinky Hijikata and Jason Kubler with a score of 6-4, 6-4 in a round-robin match held on Wednesday. Currently holding a 1-1 record in their group, Bopanna and his Australian counterpart have the possibility of advancing to the semifinals pending the outcome of their upcoming match against Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski scheduled for Friday.
The record for the oldest player to secure a victory at the tournament was held by Canada’s Daniel Nestor, who achieved this feat at the age of 42 in 2014. Recently, Rohan Bopanna surpassed this milestone by becoming the oldest champion in the ATP Masters 1000 series. His achievement occurred earlier this year when he, alongside Ebden, clinched the Indian Wells doubles title.
Incidentally, Ram and Salisbury also emerged victorious against their opponents in the US Open finals this year. Following this triumph, Bopanna and Ebden are set to confront the Dutch and English duo of Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski in a round-robin encounter scheduled for this upcoming Friday. The partnership between the Indian and Australian players commenced at the beginning of the season, and since then, they have experienced continuous success.
Their fruitful year includes securing tour-level trophies in Doha and Indian Wells. Notably, Bopanna achieved the distinction of becoming the oldest ATP Masters 1000 champion earlier this year when he, alongside Ebden, clinched the Indian Wells doubles title. While this marks Bopanna’s fourth appearance at the year-end event, it serves as the debut for the pair in this particular tournament.
