Niranjan Mukundan, a prominent Indian Para swimmer, has made a significant decision ahead of the Para Asian Games 2022. Known for his remarkable achievements, including participation in the Tokyo Paralympics and securing the “B” qualification for the Paris Paralympic Games 2024, Niranjan Mukundan has chosen to return to his roots by training in his home country, India.
Since 2021, Niranjan had been training in Berlin at Germany’s national training center under the guidance of the national coach, Maik Zeh.
During his time in Germany, he achieved considerable success, winning multiple medals and solidifying his path to the Paris Paralympics. However, his journey faced a sudden hurdle when he encountered a foot infection during the World Championships held in August. This unfortunate setback forced him to withdraw from the competition and return to India for medical treatment and rehabilitation.
Speaking about his road to recovery, Niranjan expressed his gratitude for the support he received from his medical team and his determination to get back into the pool. After careful consideration and discussions with his team of doctors and coaches, he made the decision to return to his childhood coach, John Christopher, who has been an integral part of his training for the past 15 years. Despite this move, his overseas coach, Maik Zeh, will continue to play a vital role in his training by overseeing sessions and monitoring his progress remotely.
Niranjan Mukundan, an exceptional para swimmer, clinched the Junior World Champion title in 2015. Additionally, he has garnered numerous medals in both national and international tournaments. With these accomplishments, the para-swimmer from Bengaluru has amassed a total of 98 international medals and inch closer to the coveted “100 medals club.”
His return to training in India with the upcoming Para Asian Games 2022 on the horizon signifies his determination to bring glory to his nation.
